. right now the storm has started bearing down on canada. it's about 145 miles or so southwest of halifax, snow scotia after brushing parts of massachusetts overnight. the storm disrupted vacations this labor day weekend. its close skirt up the eastern seaboard was less intense than feared. the storm is still kicking up dangerous rip currents. we have nbc's kevin tibbles live in rock port, massachusetts. sunshine in the last hour. looks like sunshine how. you're having a good time it looks like. >> reporter: alex, earl we hardly new you. i don't think we got to meet you at all last night. it rained here a little bit, but nothing like the dire predictions that have been taking place all week with this cat 4 storm showing up here. earl turned out to be a bit of a wimp actually. it's a beautiful day in rock port. all the activities planned for the labor day weekend and were put on hold, everything is being put back on. if folks were headed out here and were a little scared of the weather forecast, my advice to you would be to hop into a car right now because it is a gorgeous day here in rock

carolina to new england to canada as a massive storm bears down on the east coast. we'll get the latest from the director of the national hurricane center. he's standing by live. and russia's military is blowing up tanks and missile launchers with a lot of air. we'll show you what's behind this secret inflatable arsenal. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we begin with the breaking news. an oil and gas production platform caught fire in the gulf of mexico today about 100 miles off the coast of louisiana. mariner energy, the company that owns the platform, says the fire began at one of seven active wells connected to the rig. 13 workers were forced overboard, but the coast guard says no one was hurt. the coast guard reports an oil sheen, although the company says there was no hydrocarbon spill. production from the platform recently averaged about 9 million cubic feet of natural gas and 1,400 barrels of oil each day. let's get some more from cnn's tom forman who is working this story for us. what do we know, tom? >> reporter: hi, wolf, mainly what we don't know at this

canada could also see a direct hit but for us, for the u.s., the worst of the storm has really stayed off shore. that's not to say that folks across eastern north carolina up towards the delmarva are not going to see a pretty fierce storm in its path. there's the worst of the heavy rain right now. chesapeake bay and up towards new jersey and long island and then, of course, massachusetts. here's our future radar giving you a picture of what's going to happen within the next 12 to 24 hours. there's new york, this afternoon, just kind of skirting eastern long island. we will get some rain bands as well here in new york. but certainly, not the massive storm that we could have expected if it indeed continued northward. there's boston, cape cod on the islands, still concerned about you. you're still under a hurricane warning because we are expecting we could see some hurricane-force winds. there's the tra. we are going to get a new advisory at 8:00 but as of now, still a category 2. expected to weaken which is great news. just off shore of eastern massachusetts, there's cape cod and then movin

for the east cost of the united states. but what is earl dumping on canada? fox 5's glen talbot and american is in the weather center with the latest. >> reporter: it went right over nova scotia and my mother is there. i called her. she said plenty of rainfall and some really strong winds hit her area. let's take a look at earl right now. because it actually has maximum sustained winds at 65 miles per hour. racing northeast over the gulf of st. lawrence expected to pass over the extreme north eastern portion of quebec and newfoundland over the course of the night. still tropical storm warnings there, however. power outages and downed trees is what happened across the province of nova scotia as well. once it moves into the colder waters over the next 24 hours or so it will lose its tropical characteristics. here at home things are a lot calmer. pretty nice conditions. plenty of sunshine. a few clouds skirting to the north of us. other than that not bad. under the influence of a nice ridge of high pressure. the current temperatures 74 at national. 64 at baltimore. and 65 in dulles. and taking

. very close to canada and nova scot scotia. what we are seeing in this picture is something you can just barely make out. that would happen to be an area of low pressure, this kicked up right there. and at the same time, a frontal boundary that extends from it and that frontal boundary is going to help kick out that storm deeper into the atlantic and pushing it farther to the north out of harm's way. the question is where is it going to go? the latest path we have from the national hurricane center has it moving up towards nova scotia. i'm thinking landfall around noon. maybe a little bit beforehand. it's moving to the northeast at 30 miles per hour. just yesterday it was around 18 miles an hour. definitely has really increased its progress. certainly good news. the bad news is though, we still have a lot to deal with with this particular storm. you've got earl located right about here. going to put that down as an area of low pressure. at the same time, we have fiona, what is left of fiona, in this particular stop. those two entities, the issues now is you're going to have a lot of wave

in monrewl canada has been speaking to a group and advocating very strongly that 190 countries take the next store up in airport screening by advocating the use of these full body scanners. in an interview with usa today she said we need to move to the next stage of screenings. there continues to be a threat stream about taking down a commercial airliner in part because it was used successfully before and could have a huge impact. just to give you context here. if there is a piece of advice i've had over the years it's like terrorism is like water it takes the path of least resistance and we are dealing with a thinking enemy. they understand the type of improvements we've made for the screening process, that's why we saw the evolution in the type of attack with the attempted bombing on christmas day, with the underwear -- with the bomb concealed in the underwear. that is an evolution in the tactic and it's also an indicator that when it comes to airline security al-qaida and others are watching what we are doing, they are trying to take steps to circumvent that security which is why the secr
